Assisted Dying

Today I voted against the Assisted Dying Bill. I understand it is an emotional issue, I respect the fact that people have different views. My opposition is based not only on a principle, but on serious concern about a fundamentally flawed Bill.

It lacks the proper safeguards and has not had the proper Parliamentary scrutiny. There are just too many vague areas in the Bill and it doesn’t protect those most in need. But in my view the Bill has far too many shortfalls.

I think we should focus on the dignity of life. I’d like to see better palliative care, which needs far more investment to support those most in need. There is a real postcode lottery of palliative care, especially in parts of Bradford.

I will continue to campaign against the Bill in Parliament at all its remaining stages and continue to make the case for better palliative care.
